I pursued a career in college counseling to help connect students with colleges that were good academic and personal fits for the student and also affordable for the family. College is a major investment for most families, and I believe families and students should be both informed and strategic in their approach to maximizing affordability for financing college.
I'm drawn almost equally to creative expression and detail-oriented data analysis. Helping students develop a custom college list perfectly pairs my affinity for organizing data with my skill in creatively tailoring that data for each student's unique circumstances and priorities. I view the process of connecting students with good fit colleges as a puzzle -- and as a college counselor, lawyer, historical researcher and lifelong genealogist, I've developed a strong skill-set to connect the dots or put the puzzle together. Writing and analytical skills I've honed throughout my professional life help me guide students through the process of brainstorming and polishing their college application essays. Yet, one of my strongest attributes is the ability to actively listen, and listening to my clients and following their lead will always guide my work. I believe all high-achieving students should have access to the information necessary to find academically-challenging and affordable college options. Wealth and privilege continues to perpetuate inequity in the American higher education system, and I am committed to offering pro bono services to several students each year. In addition to college access counseling, I'm an attorney specializing in corporate transactional work and a published author of a series of historical romance novels set during World War II. Like many people who make a living through words, I'm a voracious bookworm, happiest in bookstores and libraries. The TV mini-series "Roots" kindled a life-long enthusiasm for genealogy. I'm also a scrapbooker (in fact, I'm a bit of a paper addict). I love to travel and have been fortunate to experience time in many wonderful locations in the US and abroad. I live in Houston with our two feuding cats. My daughter is a graduate of The George Washington University and is living and working in DC. My son is a professional flight major at Purdue University. |
